Brisbane energy upgrades in 2026

What’s changing, what to plan for and where a licensed electrician fits in

The shift is from generation to orchestration

Solar is now joined by batteries, EVs, efficient electric appliances and controls that can respond to when energy is available or costs less.

Home batteries

More households are pairing batteries with rooftop solar to use stored daytime energy in the evening. Eligible small-scale batteries can receive a federal upfront discount through the Cheaper Home Batteries Program; check eligibility and product requirements before committing.

Smart EV charging

Home charging remains where most EV charging happens. A dedicated charger, appropriate circuit capacity and smart scheduling can help match charging to solar output or cheaper periods. Plan the switchboard and parking route together.

All-electric comfort

Efficient reverse-cycle air conditioning, induction cooking and heat-pump hot water are making electrification a practical renovation pathway. The best sequence depends on your existing supply, appliances and solar profile.

A sensible upgrade sequence

  1. Start with safety and capacity. Have an electrician assess the switchboard, earthing, circuits and available capacity.
  2. Reduce avoidable demand. Efficient appliances, LEDs and sensible controls lower the system size you may need.
  3. Make the home solar and battery ready. Consider cable paths, meter-board space, communications and future load requirements.
  4. Add controlled loads. EV charging, air conditioning and hot water benefit from settings that suit solar production, tariffs and lifestyle.
  5. Choose interoperable equipment. Emerging national consumer-energy-device requirements are putting more focus on devices that can communicate and work together.

2026 snapshot

Renewables supplied 39.6% of Australia’s total electricity generation in 2025. Battery storage is increasingly moving excess daytime solar into the evening peak—one reason flexible, well-designed home systems are becoming more valuable.
